Where did it start?
The state of Indiana was the first to pass a mandatory sterilization law in 1907.
Who was targeted?
- Confirmed criminals
- Idiots
- Rapists
- Imbeciles
idiot:
1: an idiot is someone who does foolish things.
imbecile:
1: a stupid person.
Where did it go from there?
Other states soon followed, with California having the highest number of sterilizations and North Carolina having the most aggressive since they gave social workers the power to designate people for sterilization.

Since women bore children, eugenicists held women more accountable than men for the reproduction of the less “desirable” members of society.

Poverty was added as a characteristic of “unfit” genes. Doctors told mothers that their daughters needed medical treatment, but they were actually sterilizing them.
- Hispanic women were often sterilized due to the fact that they could not read the consent forms.
- In 1972 at least 2,000 involuntary sterilizations had been performed on poor black women without their consent.
- Native American women were also victims of sterilization abuse up into the 1970s.
- 148 female prisoners in California were sterilized between 2006 and 2010 without consent to the procedures.
- A mental institution in Lincoln, Illinois fed its incoming patients milk infected with tuberculosis (reasoning that genetically fit individuals would be resistant).
- Unmarried women were added to the list since it was seen as a stupid act to have children outside of marriage.

You Asked — “Who defines/enforces such things?”
My Response — The people who define it are the people it will never be applied to.
The people who enforce it are those who blindly follow them.

Are they ‘thinking’ people, OR are they just following orders?

You Asked — “Are they ‘thinking’ people, OR are they just following orders?”
My Answer — They are people who think they are right in their thinking while hiding behind the illusion of orders 😉
