The University Of California Has Created A Device That Translates Human Thoughts Into Text, With A 90 Percent Accuracy Rate

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have developed a machine and computer program that converts brain activity into text.

Thoughts activate specific neurons in the brain and each word is a slightly different set of combined neurons.

Now scientists have an algorithm that can pick up that activity and translate it outside of the human body. It can even process words it has not seen before.

They can literally tap into your inner voice, that voice in your head that only you can hear.

Other entities are also jumping on board in a race to have the first and fastest mind reading tech on the market. With so many companies, governments, and schools competing to be first in this new arena, the chances of a deployable model within just a few years is now a reality.

How this can be applied is mind-blowing or scary:

  • Pre employment screening
  • Help those who have lost the ability to speak
  • Allow messaging without phones
  • Interrogate prisoners without torture
  • Settle court cases instantly
  • Detect cheating spouses
  • Know if politicians are truthful
  • Communicate with autistic people
  • Read information from dreams
  • Find terrorist faster
  • Isolate anti-government radicals

Keep in mind that this is not new in respect to capability it is only new in respect to accuracy. The gaming community already have several brainwave translators that you can order on Amazon and they have been working for years.

This could be beneficial and also alarming!

  2. Is a 10% failure rate acceptable? How do they really know that it works? What if all of the participants are lying?

  3. There’s a fair bit of hyperbole here.

RT is reporting on an article from the Daily Mail (“No more secrets! New mind-reading machine can translate your thoughts and display them as text INSTANTLY” – 31 March 2018), which cites an article in The Sun (“Mind-reading machine can now translate your thoughts to text immediately by interpreting brain activity. Scientists say it can one day be used by patients who are unable to speak as the technology has an accuracy of 90 per cent” – 30th March 2018), which (finally) cites the name of the researcher (David Moses) and a source: The Journal of Neural Engineering.

A quick google search yields the following paper:

Real-time classification of auditory sentences using evoked cortical activity in humans
    David A Moses1,2,3, Matthew K Leonard1,2 and Edward F Chang1,2,3,4

    Published 27 February 2018 • © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd
Journal of Neural Engineering, Volume 15, Number 3

    http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1741-2552/aaab6f

And the abstract from the published paper (behind a paywall) reads:

“We tested the system with two human subjects implanted with electrode arrays over the lateral brain surface. Subjects listened to multiple repetitions of ten sentences, and rtNSR classified what was heard in real-time from neural activity patterns using direct sentence-level and HMM-based phoneme-level classification schemes. Main results. We observed single-trial sentence classification accuracies of $90% or higher for each subject with less than 7 minutes of training data, demonstrating the ability of rtNSR to use cortical recordings to perform accurate real-time speech decoding in a limited vocabulary setting.”

So despite the ominous claims, we’re not quite there yet — not by a long shot. However, the intended purpose — i.e., helping the speeh-impaired — sounds wonderful (pun intended).

  4. There is no hyperbole

The post and RT news report exactly what the machine can actually do right now.

The report states that researchers have developed a machine and computer program that converts brain activity into text.

Your direct research revealed the following: “We observed single-trial sentence classification accuracies of 90% or higher for each subject with less than 7 minutes of training data, demonstrating the ability of rtNSR to use cortical recordings to perform accurate real-time speech decoding in a limited vocabulary setting.”

They are, in fact, recording information that is at the moment, only a voice that we hear in our head.

As I stated, “the chances of a deployable model within just a few years is now a reality.” This was because in the gaming community, (my community), we already have several brainwave translators that are ordered from Amazon and they have been working for years. The only difference is that the accuracy level is around 60% and the training time is days not min like this new technology.

I left that out of the article but I will add it so that people are more aware:

See for yourself on amazon just one of many:

Or see some people doing their own brainwave headset testing:
    Mindwave!

I will also add that none or all of it is ominous depending on an individual’s level of fear of which I have none. Let them move forward with the future.

The new unit will be used for one if not all of the following but not because it’s new, rather because it is more accurate. We have been using them already for years in gaming.

Help those who have lost the ability to speak
    Allow messaging without phones
    Interrogate prisoners without torture
    Settle court cases instantly
    Detect cheating spouses
    Know if politicians are truthful
    Communicate with autistic people
    Read information from dreams
    Find terrorist faster
    Isolate anti-government radicals

    • The crucial part of the report was:

“Subjects listened to multiple repetitions of ten sentences, and rtNSR classified what was heard in real-time from neural activity patterns using direct sentence-level and HMM-based phoneme-level classification schemes.”

Monitoring neural activity while listening to a pre-recorded audio is not the same as reading impromtu thoughts as they occur. Ands the device used in the reseach paper requires implants to achieve even the former results. The gaming device only monitors eye motions and general brain activity.

  5. I have updated the article with the current Brainwave devices currently for sale at Amazon. This technology is not new and it is not going away. This is your future so start thinking about where you want to be in relation to it.

  6. Pre employment screening anyone? We’ll have to define productive vs dishonest lying, or motive. Psychologist already do this with delusional—functioning vs non functional beliefs

  7. Might have some benefits, but ultimately, no thanks (for me personally – I’m too nervous.

  8. I rescind my earlier statement about it possibly having some benefits – the only benefits it will have are for the big wigs. It’s totally wrong. It’s an invasion of privacy and you will then be convicted just for what you think. Man will abuse it, just as man has always done. It’s giving the big wigs control over you.

  9. Now that’s scary!. Guess it was inevitable.
