Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have developed a machine and computer program that converts brain activity into text.
Thoughts activate specific neurons in the brain and each word is a slightly different set of combined neurons.
Now scientists have an algorithm that can pick up that activity and translate it outside of the human body. It can even process words it has not seen before.
They can literally tap into your inner voice, that voice in your head that only you can hear.
Other entities are also jumping on board in a race to have the first and fastest mind reading tech on the market. With so many companies, governments, and schools competing to be first in this new arena, the chances of a deployable model within just a few years is now a reality.
How this can be applied is mind-blowing or scary:
- Pre employment screening
- Help those who have lost the ability to speak
- Allow messaging without phones
- Interrogate prisoners without torture
- Settle court cases instantly
- Detect cheating spouses
- Know if politicians are truthful
- Communicate with autistic people
- Read information from dreams
- Find terrorist faster
- Isolate anti-government radicals
Keep in mind that this is not new in respect to capability it is only new in respect to accuracy. The gaming community already have several brainwave translators that you can order on Amazon and they have been working for years.

Is a 10% failure rate acceptable? How do they really know that it works? What if all of the participants are lying?

We have far less than that for people in jail right now so I don’t think they will care.

Oh man, scary as hell. They could put a calibrated sticker on it and just lie. They could basically say whatever they wanted about anyone’s thoughts.

Maybe but I suspect with so many sides in opposition everyone will be running their own tests. So you are going to know one way or the other who’s really lying.
The only thing to worry about is your privacy.
As in the end of said privacy 😉
But you will be safer when we know what everyone is thinking.

I don’t think safety is even an actual tangible thing anymore Lander.
What do you mean by safety?

Technology has several root goals:
convenience — pushed via corporations
safety — pushed via government
defense — pushed via the military
Mind reading is going to be pushed on all three fronts but the only one that can reach a U.S. citizen that rejects the technology is (safety)
You don’t want convenience and the military can’t legally come to your door but what if you’re a danger to the safety of your neighbors?
What if you are mentally ill or a terrorist?
The court precedence is already in place from what has been allowed in poor communities, all that remains is deployment via something like HLS… to keep society safe (from you), an unknown who hides his thoughts.
If you think I’m kidding then spend some time in here:

I agree, so what is the actual definition of safety in our society today?
What is the goal of safety and is it standardized?
If it is not, then why strive for safety?

Q – I agree, so what is the actual definition of safety in our society today?
A – Safety is defined by the main stream media in relation to popular opinion within two political parties that control the narrative. FOX, CNN, and MSNBC define safety. Check your news alerts.
Q -What is the goal of safety and is it standardized?
A – The goal is to increase spending on all levels (consumer to government) and it is not standardized to prevent joint opposition. Think Y2K, the wall, vaccines, and gun shows. Your wallet is keeping you safe apparently, so just keep purchasing.
Q – If it is not, then why strive for safety?
A – To feel safe. Guns on every corner, laws for every contingency, police everywhere and the world’s largest military are not enough. This is a wheel that needs constant reinvention.

There’s a fair bit of hyperbole here.
RT is reporting on an article from the Daily Mail (“No more secrets! New mind-reading machine can translate your thoughts and display them as text INSTANTLY” – 31 March 2018), which cites an article in The Sun (“Mind-reading machine can now translate your thoughts to text immediately by interpreting brain activity. Scientists say it can one day be used by patients who are unable to speak as the technology has an accuracy of 90 per cent” – 30th March 2018), which (finally) cites the name of the researcher (David Moses) and a source: The Journal of Neural Engineering.
A quick google search yields the following paper:
Real-time classification of auditory sentences using evoked cortical activity in humans
David A Moses1,2,3, Matthew K Leonard1,2 and Edward F Chang1,2,3,4

Journal of Neural Engineering, Volume 15, Number 3

And the abstract from the published paper (behind a paywall) reads:
So despite the ominous claims, we’re not quite there yet — not by a long shot. However, the intended purpose — i.e., helping the speeh-impaired — sounds wonderful (pun intended).

There is no hyperbole
The post and RT news report exactly what the machine can actually do right now.
The report states that researchers have developed a machine and computer program that converts brain activity into text.
Your direct research revealed the following: “We observed single-trial sentence classification accuracies of 90% or higher for each subject with less than 7 minutes of training data, demonstrating the ability of rtNSR to use cortical recordings to perform accurate real-time speech decoding in a limited vocabulary setting.”
They are, in fact, recording information that is at the moment, only a voice that we hear in our head.
As I stated, “the chances of a deployable model within just a few years is now a reality.” This was because in the gaming community, (my community), we already have several brainwave translators that are ordered from Amazon and they have been working for years. The only difference is that the accuracy level is around 60% and the training time is days not min like this new technology.
I left that out of the article but I will add it so that people are more aware:
See for yourself on amazon just one of many:

https://www.amazon.com/OCZ-OCZMSNIA-NIA-Impulse-Actuator/dp/B00168VU4U
Or see some people doing their own brainwave headset testing:
Mindwave!
I will also add that none or all of it is ominous depending on an individual’s level of fear of which I have none. Let them move forward with the future.
The new unit will be used for one if not all of the following but not because it’s new, rather because it is more accurate. We have been using them already for years in gaming.
Help those who have lost the ability to speak
Allow messaging without phones
Interrogate prisoners without torture
Settle court cases instantly
Detect cheating spouses
Know if politicians are truthful
Communicate with autistic people
Read information from dreams
Find terrorist faster
Isolate anti-government radicals

The crucial part of the report was:
“Subjects listened to multiple repetitions of ten sentences, and rtNSR classified what was heard in real-time from neural activity patterns using direct sentence-level and HMM-based phoneme-level classification schemes.”
Monitoring neural activity while listening to a pre-recorded audio is not the same as reading impromtu thoughts as they occur. Ands the device used in the reseach paper requires implants to achieve even the former results. The gaming device only monitors eye motions and general brain activity.

Stated — “Monitoring neural activity while listening to a pre-recorded audio is not the same as reading impromptu thoughts as they occur”
Response — This was done to provide a base reading. They also stated that it was able to, “process words it has not seen before”.
This technology is moving much faster than people have predicted and the competition is also moving forward with units. Units that do not require any implants. Keep in mind how fast the cell phone evolved and then look at what they have already made.

Pre employment screening anyone? We’ll have to define productive vs dishonest lying, or motive. Psychologist already do this with delusional—functioning vs non functional beliefs

Hadn’t thought of that one, “Pre employment screening”
Did you like your last job?
Why did you leave?
Did people like you?
Did you steal from the company?
Have you used drugs?
Very nice! I’m adding that to the post.

My scoutmaster back in the day, Rick Bennett, had developed the HAGOTH Voice Stress Analyzer back in the 70s. It was supposed to be the rage and lasted a few years then too many errors. He retired off it though. You put it out of view and ask basic questions then ask the important ones after getting a baseline. He had a computer that filled an entire room in his house. Pretty cool.

He was (still is) a super cool and generous guy. He took us all to Disneyland one year. Airfare, everything. He was well connected with Hollywood and took us to the Premier of Greece in A Hollywood theatre. All the stars were there and it was a big deal. Then we made a really bad movie, but it played in a Seattle theater a few nights before the big show. It was called Darth Vader in Exile. It picked up where darth veered into space at the end of the first movie. He then landed in our home town.

I rescind my earlier statement about it possibly having some benefits – the only benefits it will have are for the big wigs. It’s totally wrong. It’s an invasion of privacy and you will then be convicted just for what you think. Man will abuse it, just as man has always done. It’s giving the big wigs control over you.
