Alpheidae (pistol shrimp) only grows to about 3–5 cm. It has a claw larger than half its body size designed like a gun. When used, it snaps emitting an enormously powerful wave.
Where this gets stranger:
The claw creates a cavitation bubble:
- The cavitation bubble reaches temperatures of over 5,000 K (4,700 °C)
- Generates acoustic pressures of up to 80 kPa
- The bubbles reach speeds of 62 mph
- It releases sounds reaching 218 decibels
- The pressure is strong enough to kill small fish
- It also produces light (not visible to the naked eye)
That is quite interesting. I saw a similar thing in the TV show Octonauts once.
