Meet The Shrimp That Can Fire Bubbles With The Heat Of The Sun

Alpheidae (pistol shrimp) only grows to about 3–5 cm. It has a claw larger than half its body size designed like a gun. When used, it snaps emitting an enormously powerful wave.

Where this gets stranger:

The claw creates a cavitation bubble:

  • The cavitation bubble reaches temperatures of over 5,000 K (4,700 °C)
  • Generates acoustic pressures of up to 80 kPa
  • The bubbles reach speeds of 62 mph
  • It releases sounds reaching 218 decibels
  • The pressure is strong enough to kill small fish
  • It also produces light (not visible to the naked eye)

  1. That is quite interesting. I saw a similar thing in the TV show Octonauts once.
