Japan Has A Yearly Penis Festival Because Of A Vagina Demon

The Shinto Kanamara Matsuri (Festival of the Steel Phallus) is held each spring at the Kanayama Shrine in Kawasaki, Japan. It was started in 1969 and is centered around a local penis-venerating shrine.

The penis is the central theme of the event. Many of the foods, art, costumes, illustrations, candy, carved vegetables, decorations, and jewelry are designed to look like penises.

The shrine and festival are based on a legend about a demon that hid inside the vagina of a young woman and would bite the penis off of any man that fell in love with her on their wedding night.

She had a local blacksmith create an iron penis to break the demon’s teeth.

The Kanayama Shrine was popular among prostitutes who pray at it for protection from sexually transmitted infections.

It is also said that the shrine offers divine protections for easy delivery, marriage, and married-couple harmony.

Today the festival is also used to raise money for HIV research.

Also, note that all the objects made are circumcised.

  1. Looks like they have a much healthier attitude toward sex than North Americans do. The evangelicals would be so appalled thay would probably cover their eyes behind see-through plastic sleep masks. As for touching the sacred penis, they would have to cut off their hands. Putting an ice-cream penis in their mouth? I can’t even imagine their reaction!
