Coffee comes from the pit inside the coffee fruit. Coffee seeds are the pit inside the red or purple fruit often referred to as a coffee cherry.

The flesh of the cherries is separated from the seeds and then the seeds are fermented – soaked in water for about two days. This softens the mucilage which is a sticky pulp residue that is still attached to the seeds. Then the mucilage is washed off and the seeds are roasted.

Coffee fruit is a superfruit and is loaded with antioxidants and (BDNF), a type of protein that is crucial to neuronal health and the growth of new neurons in the brain. It will help support the survival of existing brain cells.
They look like berries, green at the start and red as they ripen.
They are sweet with very little flesh.

There is also a brand of coffee, after being eaten by monkeys, it is extracted from the “droppings”, cleaned up and then sold. I hear it’s expensive.

Gross!

It’s not surprising, the amount of gross food there is… when someone KNOWS exactly what they are eating.
But the reality of “this” gross, is that it’s only remotely gross, compared to many other food like edibles.

I didn’t know that. A lot better way of getting it than from animal droppings.

Very interesting! What do they do with the fruit? Is it edible?
