The female is the largest fish, the breeding male is the second largest and the rest are sexually immature males.
Males can turn into females if the alpha female dies. If this happens the dominant male will get the first choice of food and begin to gain weight, ultimately becoming female. She will then choose a breeding partner, which is usually the next largest and most aggressive male available. The two will then pair off and breed.

Clownfish also have a symbiotic relationship with the stationary, bush-like animal, “sea anemone”.

Wrasses and moray eels also have the ability to switch gender roles.
In that case… Finding Nemo, makes no logical sense. 😉

The story is about a male clownfish (Marlin (Albert Brooks)) looking for his son but in reality he should have transformed into a female once his mate was lost.

I have seen Finding Nemo (I have it on DVD). I just hadn’t got Kenneth’s comment.
Ah well. It’s made for kids, and they were humanising the animals.

Sheesh! More simpler the way they did it in the movie.

Hmmm…
This means a sweat lie is better than a harsh truth.
How strange.

Weeell… somebody was thinking about children. haha

Yeah. You don’t show children going with the “mother” in a kids movie. And maybe the directors didn’t know about all that. And it doesn’t really matter – it is still a good movie, even if not fully accurate.

That link spells it out correctly.

I had heard that there were some birds that could change their gender if needs be. I hadn’t known that clown fish could do it.

Amphibians also do it (which they played on in Jurassic Park, with the dinos frog genes that allowed them to change gender).

Interesting how they must put on weight during the transition.

Fish do it, birds do it, now humans do it.
