In 1991 the government of Somalia collapsed.
Once they were unable to police the coastline, corporations and governments started dumping nuclear waste in their seas.
The coastal population began to suffer from strange rashes, nausea, malformed babies, and radiation sickness. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of leaking barrels washed up on shore. There is also lead, cadmium, and mercury now in the food supply.
This is why you need to know about this:
Fishing ships have been looting Somalia’s seas. More than $300m worth of tuna, shrimp, lobster and other seafood is being stolen every year by vast trawlers illegally sailing into Somalia’s unprotected seas.
The same seas with the toxic waste are being fished illegally to supply corporations in the EU and US with seafood. The same corporations that process, package, and distribute food to your local grocery store. Food that could make it’s way to your dinner table.
Where the media has failed to provide the full story:
Your last line of defense is actually the vilified Somalian fishermen, who we are calling “pirates”. They call themselves the Volunteer Coastguard of Somalia and consider sea bandits to be those who illegally fish and dump in their seas.
Niiiiiiiice. One more thing to worry about.

At some point in the future we should switch from worry to shutting these companies down.
