The Iglesia Maradoniana (Church of Maradona), was founded on October 30, 1998. It is a religion created to worship a retired Argentine soccer playerDiego Armando Maradona “.

The Maradonian Church boasts approximately half a million worshipers/supporters worldwide who praise the soccer legend.

Apostles of the church perform baptisms at yearly Maradonian Mass (his birthday). Children, women and men alike are anointed with sports holy water from a 4-liter plastic container from the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

  • They have their own priest
  • Their own unique version of The Lord’s Prayer
  • Their own baptismal for new converts
  • Their own 10 commandments
  • Their own rituals

In one ritual, each member of the Church of Maradona has the players number 10 on his back. At the altar a soccer ball with coils of barbed wire crowning it and a trickle of blood dripping down on one side. There is a large portrait of Diego Armando Maradona in the background.

The Church of Maradona’s ten commandments

  1. The ball is never soiled.
  2. Love football above all else.
  3. Declare unconditional love for Diego and the beauty of football.
  4. Defend the Argentina shirt.
  5. Spread the news of Diego’s miracles throughout the universe.
  6. Honor the temples where he played and his sacred shirts.
  7. Don’t proclaim Diego as a member of any single team.
  8. Preach and spread the principles of the Church of Maradona.
  9. Make Diego your middle name.
  10. Name your first son Diego.

Behind the church is the dark history of its interest.

Maradona was addicted to cocaine during his soccer career. He once fired a rifle at journalists and photographers outside his home. He was also photographed naked, snorting coke, surrounded by nude women.

Keep in mind, this is a growing religion. (very slow but growing)

  3. I remember Jerry Doyle talking about a head of lettuce on his radio show. He said if a head of lettuce was shown on TV and talked about, people would pray to it, turn it into a celebrity and travel great distances to see it.
