The town of Centralia, Pennsylvania has been on fire since May of 1962 because the town wanted to burn trash rather than properly developing a costly garbage disposal system.

For 16 years the townspeople tried to extinguish the fire but failed. The fire is burning at depths of up to 300 feet (90 m) over an 8-mile (13 km) stretch of space. Random deadly pockets of gas and fire find their way up. Temperatures of 180 degrees Fahrenheit have been documented on the ground’s surface.

Many of the residents started experiencing blackouts as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and methane gas began leaking out of cracks in the ground.

Most of the town is now abandoned. The population dwindled from around 1,400 at the time the fire to only 10 people in 2017, and most of the buildings have been leveled. The last remaining citizens reside in a modern ghost town

All real estate in the borough was claimed under eminent domain in 1992 and therein condemned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

In a creepy reality, the town’s hilltop cemetery has smoke rising out of it.

There is enough coal underground to fuel the fire for another 250 years.

  1. Isn’t that what they based the film “resident evil” on? Or the town anyway?
