Coober Pedy is a small desert town in Australia where people live in underground homes. With outside temperatures hovering over 100 degrees, residents made permanent homes in the cooler temperatures of the old mine shafts. It has underground motels, churches, bars, and a graveyard.

The mines also supply most of the world’s gem-quality opals. Coober Pedy has over 70 opal fields and is the largest opal mining area in the world. It relies as much on tourism as the opal mining industry to provide the community with employment and sustainability.
